Alanja stepped out into the sun. It was warm. She glanced back over her shoulder at the ship knowing that she could not board it again. This was her final destination. She would never see Coruscant or Chandrila, nor Ryloth or Naboo ever again. This was the place she would live out her days in seclusion as a prisoner of a pirate. Her heart ached wishing Crosshair and Rov were there to share it with her, but both of them were gone to her forever now. She was alone in this open air prison disguised as an island paradise.
"Come on," said the pirate, Phee. "I have some folks you need to meet." When she didn't move, Phee turned to look back at her. "Island time is slow, but I've never seen anyone acclimate to it so fast," she said sarcastically. "Get those feet moving."
"I can never leave."
"Afraid not, Curls. You're stuck here," she said with a wink. "But I think you will get over it. Better than some backwater Imperial work camp."
"Why imprison me? Why not just throw me out the airlock?"
"You prefer that when you could have all this?" Phee held her hands out wide to the crumbling island city. Alanja could tell that Pabu had once been idealic, but now it was haunted by war. She could still smell the burning even and feel the tension of her arrival with the villagers. A group of children stopped to stare at her, their eyes so full of fear and wonder at her appearance. There was a woman with them. All of them watched her like they knew her and trembled at her arrival. Phee noticed them staring too.
Out of habit, Alanja put her left hand over her heart, two of her fingers missing, the middle finger that had once held her precious scope ring one of the missing. A trandoshan named Sid did that to her trying to get information out of her to get at Clone Force 99 and the other rogue clones. She couldn't help but feel like this place had once been like her, beautiful and just wanting to escape the endless strife of the galaxy, but trouble came no matter how peaceful they wanted to be. "What happened here?"
"The Empire."
Alanja suddenly felt faint and involuntarily looked back at the ship, ready to run.
Phee registered the terror on Alanja's face, consoling her with, "Their long gone, and not coming back."
Shivering, Alanja looked at the scared faces of the children. "How do you know?"
"A few of my friends took care of that problem on Tantiss."
"Hemlock did this?"
Phee gave a bitter shrug. "And they did him for it."
"Miss Rampart?" a youthful voice cried in the distance.
