I would see those stars
And reach up like I did that night.
I would feel the tingle in my fingertips
And it would spread,
It would warm me to my core
Where, at the very center,
Would lay my tired heart.
But summer would fill it.
And finally, I would take flight
And leave this world behind.
Love would be the only thing this winter,
And my summer pie would save me.
The cheese and crackers we that spread summer on are gone.
That small butterknife is much too short to cut into the school year,
And the school year is much too dense for the golden blade to part.
Take that mid-summer night's pie
Slice a piece
And freeze it in an icebox.
And when the time comes when I can't bare the rain,
When I don't have the persistance,
Or the strength,
To make it through the seasons with the school year,
I'll thaw that slice of summer pie.
I'll let that breeze run slow over my body, through my hair,
There will be sand stuck between my toes
And the shadow of a smile would wander my face.
