'After passionate nights and intimate days'
A broken body blown away
And bullets buried in his chest
Fractured ribs and damaged jaw
Grazed collar-bone and punctured lung
Frozen river he struts along
In his mind un-exploded metal
Traced back to his parachute
Nerve of rest, widened and tightened
Imaginary smoke clears
Into warmth of sheets and shelter, he goes
He clambers into soft safety
Never again shall he go to War
