Mai is an honor roll student, step-sister, daughter, step-daughter, part-time librarian, and best friend to none. At least, those are the roles she's been given in life. But there's one very few seem to know about: victim. Mai has been on the receiving end of more than just a slap or two. Ever since her drunk of a dad decided to marry the rich, recently and mysteriously widowed drama queen down the street, things have only gotten worse for her. Her dad has become more abusive, her step-brother has taken advantage of her inability to defend herself, and her step-mom has made her the butt of one-too-many cruel jokes. But then things take a turn for the better.

Transfer student Henry Rikes has the peculiar ability of being able to sense and predict the exact date an individual is going to die and how they do. He's made the mistake of telling people before, something that only caused more deaths and the main reason for his transfer to the opposite side of the country. But then he meets a girl with hours left to live and he can't help but want to save her when he sees how she's going to die.

Soon enough, Henry becomes the friend Mai never had. However, life has other things in store for them...
