Chapter 1

I ran through the trees swiftly and quietly, unnoticed in the thickness of the darkness. Being that the moon was my only light, I felt around with my feet as I drifted through the night. As footsteps filled my ears I suddenly stopped.

He was behind me, I knew it.

Suddenly, I dove behind a enormous tree, my heart pounding loudly. I looked around me, my chesnut colored hair blowing swiftly in the wind. Then, I stopped as I heard footsteps moving closer. What would he do if he found me? Capture me? Kill me? I didn't know, but what I did know was I wasnt sticking around long to find out.

My wings escaped from my back and I took flight, hopefully leaving him behind. I looked around me. My wings were beautiful. They were pale white and they felt just like satin. My wings made me feel invincible and almost unreal.

As the cold wind brushed my face feirce hands gripped around my waist pulling me down quickly. I fought as best as I could as I punched the boys chest with and kicked him ferociously.

Unfortuantley, that wasn't enough. I hit the ground hard. I gasped for air , my wings craddling me. What was left for him to do now? Just a few more seconds and my lack of breath would declare me dead. These thoughts flew around my head as the boy approached me. He knelt down closely his lips almost to mine. My blurred vision caused me not to see his face.

"No matter what it takes Rowan, I will find you." He said slowly stroking my pale face.

. . .

"Rowan please wake up!" My brother, Alexander, said as he shook me.

"Goodness Alex what is it!" I yelled pushing him away from me.

"Mother's home, she's drunk again." He said slowly, pain filling his dark brown eye's.

"Get under my bed, I'll be right back." I said pulling my blanket over the sides of my bed so you couldn't see under it.

After my father left my mother has been wasting her life away with drugs and alchohol unaware of how much her family needed her. Night time was always the worst. She would yell, cry, throw things, and even hit us at times.

"How dare you leave this family!" She said throwing a beer bottle at a picture of my father, causing it to shatter on our hardwood floor.

My mother then fell onto the ground, weeping into her khaki pants.

"M-mother?" I choked out slowly going down the stairs.

She looked up at me her mascara streaming down her pale cheeks. She then cursed under breath and rolled her eye's at me.

"Mother I think it's time to go to bed." I said walking slowly to her.

"You think your just hot stuff don't you? Trying to tell me what to do? Screw you!" She said, saying a different word then screw.

She then stood up slowly, trying her best to keep her balance. She flipped me off and then started to laugh.

"Your pathetic." I whispered.

"Shutup!" She said picking up a small lamp and throwing at me. Of course, she only managed to throw it onto the floor in front of me and even that little throw caused her to go face first into the ground.

The alchohol had won once again as she dosed off silently. No matter what it takes, one day, I am going to take my brother and leave forever.
