Sirens blared into the cold, stiff night. She huddled closer into her thin jacket and crouched lower behind the bins. The distant clatter of a car door sounded close by. Illinois had never seemed so lonely.
No one to run to.
Nowhere to hide.

The girl muffled her breath, shoving the bottom of her t-shirt into her mouth. Voices sounded distantly.
She took a chance and ran.
