NEW YEAR'S INSPIRATION

 Today I’m feeling smitten

To write something never written.

I’m wearing my thinking mitten

And cozy in my writing shack

Away from the house out back.

Although outside it’s very cold,

I decided I would be bold,

Made a roaring fire to warm me

That does help to a degree.

In a drawer is my best rum

Beside a packet of old gum

That really should be thrown away

Since it’s seen a better day.

Jake is content and sound asleep

After being restless, counting sheep.

I brought along the coffee pot

But already drank the lot

So I will slip back to the house

I must be careful not to rouse

The drummer who lives right next door

Whose drumming makes such a roar.

I’m glad I wore my Christmas socks

That came with others in a box.

Otherwise my poor feet would freeze

And I would not feel at ease,

Could not keep my resolution

And there would be no solution.

I’m determined this poem to post,

Don’t want to leave it for my ghost.

Is that my husband that I hear?

Somebody is calling out, “Dear.”

I knew something would interfere.

I was feeling so cozy,

The day was simply too rosy.
