George Ryan Ross clutched the straps of his schoolbag in fear, his sweaty hands shaking.
He was forcing himself to walk to school. His first day of high school, in fact.
Each step made it seem like Ryan was trapped in deep, wet stand; his movements were like that of a rusty, malfunctioning robot.
One step; his left arm twitches. Another step; his right leg feels as if it's made out of concrete. Yet another step; the impending doom of being late to his first day weighs heavy on him.
He doesn't want to be tardy, but he can't help it. He wants to run, but he cannot.
The reason he's so full of anxiety is because he knows that Brendon will be there.
Brendon was always the popular one.
He was always the one with awesome powers.
He was always the one that had everything that Ryan wanted, yet never got.
Ryan is scared that this will be a repeat of middle school.
