"Clay" Clay's mum, Mrs. Jensen says softly and carefully. She gulps, as Clay looks at her in confusion.
"Hannah Baker left these... tapes on Tony's door. They were suicide notes"
"Mum..." Clay said, scared of what she might tell him next.
"Tony listened to the first one, and rushed to the Baker House. Just in time to save Hannah"
"Oh" Clay said, but it wasn't really a word, more like a sigh, a relieved sigh. He was so scared Hannah had killed herself. And he didn't know what he'd do without him. "Is she okay?"
"She's in the hospital. She had started to cut her arteries when Tony rushed in. They're making sure she's okay."
Clay wasn't happy though. He was relieved, but not happy. Hannah Baker had tried to kill herself. And he couldn't shake off the feeling that it was all because of him. The time they made out and Clay left. Hannah had asked him to do that, but she didn't want him to. The thought of Clay having no way of knowing didn't even run through his head.
"When can I see her?" Clay asked.
"I don't know, Clay" Mrs. Jensen examined him. He nodded and started taking heavy steps towards his room.
"Clay?" Mrs. Jensen asked "Will you be okay?"
"I almost killed a girl, mum"
"It's not your fault" Mrs. Jensen tried to convince Clay with pity in her face.
"Yes it is, mum. Did she mention me in the tapes?" Clay asked in a demanding voice. He had to know.
"I don't know, it's been maybe twenty minutes. I haven't heard them" Mrs. Jensen hugged Clay and it was longer than Clay wanted it to be. He didn't want to hug anyone but Hannah. He wanted to be there for her. It had almost been too late. He shrugged, hoping that he could shake all the horrible things he was feeling off, but he wasn't able to. All that was going through his mind was Hannah. The image of her killing herself. Why didn't he try to stop her? He went upstairs, and thought about the feelings that were going through Tony's head when he listened to the first tape. He just wanted this day to be over. He wanted to get the tapes.
