I watched the line of four vehicles in front of us. I watched Claire Standish, that stuck up bitch walk out of the BMW and on her way up the steps to go in the school. Then, I saw Brian Johnson get out, me and him talked a few times before, I think he's talkative but sweet. Then, i saw Andrew Clarke get out of his father's truck, he's cute but not my type. Then, I saw Allison Reynolds get out and seeing her parent drive off without saying goodbye to her, I sit beside her in English class. Then, I saw him, my secret crush, John Bender, the resident bad boy of Shermer, walk into school. Me and Mom sat in the car as I gazed at the entrance of Shermer High School before me.
"Brylee, we are not going to be pulling into the school on a Saturday anymore! You understand me!?" My bitch of a mother asked.
"Yes," I replied.
"Yes?"
"I said yes-"
She hit me on the back of my head with her hand.
"Yes what!?"
"Yes, ma'am."
"Good. Now get out of my sight!"
I got out of the car and into the school and into the library. I sat at the table up front next to Andrew and Claire. I got a envelope out, took out my manuscript, a novel I just finished. The manuscript was kept safe in a folder with brads. I started reading it just for the hell of it. Then, Principal Vernon walked in.
"Well well, here we are. I would like to congratulate you for being on time," he said.
Claire raised her hand.
"Excuse me, sir. I know it's detention but I don't think I belong in here."
Vernon ignored her.
"It is now 7:06. You have exactly eight hours and fifty minutes to think about why your her, to ponder the error of your ways. Alright, people. We are going to try something a little different today. We are going to write an essay, describing to me who you think you are of no less than a thousand words. Not a single word repeated a thousand times. Is that clear, Mr. Bender?"
"Crystal," John replied.
"Good. My office is right across the hall. Any monkey business is ill advised. Any questions?"
"Yeah, I got a question. Does Barry Manilow know that you raid his wardrobe?" John joked.
I tried my best to keep a straight face.
"I will answer that question, Mr. Bender, next Saturday."
What an ass.
"Don't mess with the bull, young man, you'll get the horns."
He left.
"That man is a brownie hound," John said.
Then, we heard Allison biting her nails. We all looked at her. She looked back at us, her eyes widened for a second, then got back to biting.
"If you keep eating your hand, you're not going to be hungry for lunch," John said.
She spat at him.
"I've seen you before you know."
I continued to read.
"And you, you in the leather jacket, the black leather jacket."
He was talking to me! On the outside, I was scared of him. On the inside, I couldn't believe my crush was talking to me. I turned around.
"I've seen you too."
My heart started beating fast and loud. I nodded.
"You always have a notebook and a pencil with you, writing and writing and writing. That's all I see you do during your spare time in all your classes."
I ignored him and turned around.
Soon, I heard Brian mumbling.
"Who do you think you are. Who are you? I'm a walrus."
He was bored out of his mind, understandable. He stopped when John was staring at him. They took off their coats at the same time. Brian stopped to let John take his off. John stared at Brian with a mean look which was a turn on to me. Then, I heard John hum Sunshine of Your Love. I started humming with him, he stopped, I froze. My heart was beating fast and loud once again.
After about what seemed like an eternity, John got up and walked to the door.
"Bender, you know there isn't supposed to be any monkey business," Brian said.
"Young man, have you finished your paper?"
I smiled at that. John got back in his seat with the screws.
"Bender fix it!" Andrew said.
"Am I genius?"
"No, you're an asshole!"
"What a funny guy. Everybody shh!"
"Fix the door!"
"I've been here before, I know what I'm doing."
"Bender-"
"Shut up!"
I heard Vernon yell. Oh God, here we go. He walked in.
"Why is that door closed!? Why is that door closed!?"
"We're just sitting here, like we're supposed to," Claire said.
"I think a screw fell out of it," John said.
Vernon walked to my desk.
"Why!?"
I just looked at him with widened eyes.
"It's just closed, sir," Andrew saved me.
I smiled at Andrew, mouthing a thank you, he smiled back at me and nodded.
"Why!?"
Allison squeaked and slammed her head down on the desk.
"She doesn't talk, sir," John said.
"Give it to me, Bender!"
"I don't have it."
"You want me to yank you out of that seat and shake it out of you!?"
"I don't have it, screws fall out all the time, the world's an imperfect place."
I snorted. Vernon walked to me in a flash.
"You think this is funny, Miss. Absher!? Huh!?"
I was scared speechless. I fucking hate being yelled at.
"You have the screw, don't you."
"No, sir!" I quickly said.
He walked to the door to try to prop it open with a chair but failed. He called Andrew up.
"Hey, how come Andrew gets to get up? If he gets up, we'll all get up! It'll be anarchy!" John said.
Andrew and Vernon walked back to us.
"You're not fooling anybody, Bender. The next screw that falls out is going to be you."
"Eat my shorts."
"What was that!?"
"Eat. My. Shorts."
They argued. Now, John has two months detention.
"You're mine, Bender. For two months I got you, I got you."
"What can I say. I'm thrilled."
"I'm gonna be right outside those doors! Next time I have to come in here, I'm cracking skulls!"
John mouthed the words like he'd heard them tons before. Vernon walked out, the doors slammed.
"Fuck you!" John yelled.
I had my head down quietly crying.
"Fuck," John whispered.
