Hi my name is Marigold
I am only four years old
My daddy, he likes to drink
He gets real mean in a wink
He hits me till I'm weak
My tears then start to leak
When I cry I get hit some more
At this point I'm so sore
I long to be gone and free
Or with someone who loves me
I started school the other day
I was asked if I was okay
I lied and said I was fine
Didn't want to upset that daddy of mine
Then one day a man showed up dressed in all black
He said he was taking me and to never look back
Kid you look too slim
He said while looking grim
I looked down and said
I don't always get fed
The man looked down
He had a big frown
I can take you to a better place
Where you'll no longer have a frown on your face
You'll have no more sorrow and no more pain
You will have so much to gain
He said with a grin
It turns out you're not full of sin
Where would I go I asked teary
He replied to heaven dearie
No I'm not ready there's so much I want to do!
I said knowing I looked blue
He looked at me with sad eyes
He stares for a moment and sighs
You'll be so sad and filled with sorrow
You'll yearn for a better tomorrow
I want nothing more than to spare you of the fright
And keep you within God's sight
But if you want to stay
Be a light for those lost I say
Yes, your road is tough
But I promise it won't always be rough
Go live a long and happy life
Whatever happens take it in strife
When you're good and old
I'll come back my dear Marigold
We will sit and talk about what all you've done
You'll tell me your story and make sure to talk about all the fun
Now Marigold don't forget me
Cause i won't forget you, you'll see
He bent down to plant a kiss on my head
Live a good life for me he said
With that he was gone
I was sad but knew I had much to get done
Hello my name is Marigold
I am now 89 years old
Things were tough, the man in black was right
But those words he said I kept in sight
My daddy died of alcohol poisoning when I turned ten
That day on my desk I found a note written in pen
It read a birthday gift for you my dear
I hope you no longer live in fear
I didn't cry I wasn't sad
I was happy instead of mad
I went to live with my uncle
He likes to make me chuckle
I got past the pain and sorrow
Thanks to the man in black I got a better tomorrow
In the dark I sometimes saw his face
He was checking up on me in that place
I did as he asked and helped those in pain
I helped them stay sane
I was their light in the dark
I helped them find their spark
I told them what the man in black told me
Be a light for those lost, helping them helps you, you'll see
Take the bad things in strife
Don't ever take your life
I told them though this are tough
They won't always be so rough
Things will get always get brighter
Those burdens will get lighter
I'll see him soon, I'm close to the end
I can't wait to see my old old friend
The man in black is now here
He doesn't look like he's aged a year
He sits down next to me and I ask, my dearest friend
Is it now my end?
Yes my dear marigold he replied
I looked at him and sighed
But we do have time for a story my dear
He said wiping my tear
I looked at him and said,
My name is Marigold
And I have quite the story to be told
