Insignificance

Man is the ruler, of godly might

From plant to germ, no matter how slight,

(But let's ignore then, if we may,

Such species before, forever away)

Man is the apex, atop life's ladder,

Our throne is creation, our stomachs are fatter!

(But let's ignore then, if we may,

That the 'ladder' is branching, going every which way)

Man is the lord of all that breathes and eats,

Run before us, and our cities and streets!

(But let's ignore then, if we may,

That insects, too, make buildings, and ways)

Man is blessed with divine intellect,

To build new knowledge, to self-inspect,

(But let's ignore then, if we may,

Chimps, magpies and dolphins at play)

Man is no animal, for Lo! he is higher!

He is special in form, with greater desires!

(But let's ignore then, if we may,

Hominid forms, and their fossil array)

----------------------

Remember this, and listen well

Man is animal, it is clear to tell

From violence, to sex, to racial strife

Genocide, blood, and simple life.

We are not above, nor below, other things,

As lords to peasants, or peasants to kings,

We are unique, just as all others,

Without any privilege, or godly brothers,

We share the Earth, and do not rule it,

We don't light the Sun, nor can we cool it.

Respect yourself in a significant way,

As an insignificant being, selection at play.
