She stands among the crowd watching as the love of her life, who doesn’t know, asks another girl to prom. She watches as they kiss and feels pain in her chest. All the chances she had, she missed them, but thinking back he left little hints that he doesn’t like her. She feels stupid and foolish. Of course he doesn’t like her back. Guys like him don’t like girls like her.

On prom night she watches as all the couples dance to a slow song. She feels the urge to cry but swallows the tears. Her eyes land on him, their eyes lock, as he dances with that girl she so desperately wishes was her. Tears threaten to spill over as she turns her gaze away. She walks outside. She doesn’t want to be here.

She feels someone touch her shoulder. She turns to see a gorgeous guy. He asks her if she’s alright. Of course she smiles and says she’s fine but he sees the hurt in her eyes. He’s seen that hurt so many times in her eyes over the years. He grabs her hand and takes her back inside. He pulls her to the middle of the dance floor and wraps her arms around his neck. He snakes his arms around her waist.

They dance together gazing into each other’s eyes. This is all she ever wanted but why isn’t she happy? She still wants him but this guy she’s dancing with wants her. She sees the love he has for her in his eyes. This is all wrong. The song ends and she walks away knowing she’s leaving behind a broken heart. She feels sorry for him but he isn’t the one she wants. He stands in the middle of the floor. His heart breaking, he leaves the dance floor and the prom.

When he gets home he changes out of his clothes. He goes to his bathroom with his pocket knife. He looks into the mirror and rubs his hands over his face. He slides the knife across his wrist and watched the blood flow into the sink. He promised his mom he would stop but he couldn’t help it. He rinses his wrist turning the water pink and bandages it. He falls asleep with her still on his mind that night.

She tries to leave prom but is stopped by him. They get into a fight and somehow she told him how she felt. He’s shocked and she takes this time to make her escape. Tears are running down her face as she runs. She can hear him calling her name but she can’t face him. She runs into the street but doesn’t see the car barreling down the street. He calls her again but it’s too late. He falls to his knees beside her body and cries. He cries for what she felt, what he didn’t, and for his friend who loved her.
