How To Be A Heartbreaker - Marina And The Diamonds

August 13, 2010

After we dropped Max off, we made our way to Monroe High.

Within 5 minutes of us getting there, Erica saw a boy she thought was attractive.

"Is he new?" she whispered.

"I don't know, and, frankly, I don't care," I said coldly.

"Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed," I heard Erica mutter.

I sighed.

"I'm sorry, it's just..."

I couldn't tell her I was with Jake again. She hated him. I knew he wasn't good for me, but he added some much-needed excitement to my life.

"Just what?" she asked, curious.

"I'm just tired," I lied.

"Sorry about that. Maybe I should've left earlier so you could sleep," she smiled.

Her smiles were contagious and I couldn't help but return it.

"No," I laughed lightly. "it's not your fault,"

By that time we had reached the school.

We went to the front office to get our schedules and locker numbers and immediately started comparing the schedules as we got things from our locker.

"What's your first period?" I asked.

"Algebra. You?" she said.

"Biology,"

She groaned and gave me her schedule to compare.

"We have 2nd, 5th, and 7th period together," I stated.

"Ok, that's good," I gave her back her schedule.

"And we always have lunch,"

"Yeah,"

I checked the time.

"Shit, we're gonna be late," I said.

We both started running to class. When we split up, Erica waved.

Luckily, I got to class just in time.

There were only two seats open, and they were both in the back. But that was ok, I didn't mind siting in the back.

A few minutes into class, a boy came in, brown hair messy, as if he had just gotten out of bed, papers falling out of his bag, jacket half on, and panting like he had run all the way here from his home.

"Sorry...I'm....late," he said, taking breaths between each word.

"Don't let it happen again," Mr. Rivera, the biology teacher, told him. "There's a seat in the back near Ms. Evans," he turned back to the board and continued with his lesson.

The boy sat next to me and automatically started talking.

"Um, hi. I'm Ashton, you are?" he said, holding out his hand.

I just turned towards the front of the class.

He pulled his hand back and wiped it on his pants, clearly hurt.

Throughout the rest of the class I could feel his eyes on me.

When class was dismissed, I tapped in his shoulder.

He turned around, surprised I had acknowledged him.

"Briel," I said.

He looked confused.

"My name is Briel," I repeated.

His face brightened a little.
