Stargate Sg-1 is a sci-fi series based on the 1994 film Stargate. The story of the film and series is based on devices called "Stargate" that generate artificial vortices to travel instantly between two points in the universe. Although the series evokes the presence of about twenty SG teams, the series focuses on the team named SG-1, whose place of operation is located in a secret base of the US Airforce named SGC. The team uses the Stargate found on Earth to explore the worlds of our galaxy in search of technologies and allies to defend Earth against the alien threat inherited from the film. Unlike most science fiction series, Stargate SG-1 takes place in our day and focuses primarily on humans. The original members of SG-1 are Colonel Jack O'Neill, Dr. Daniel Jackson, Captain Samantha Carter and Teal'c. For eight seasons, their main enemy was the Goa'uld, a dominant and highly intelligent race whose goal is to control the galaxy. These extraterrestrials with the appearance of snakes take control of a body of another species, including humans, and this on several planets. The original nemesis of the SG-1 team was Lord Apophis. The character of Daniel Jackson left the series at the end of season 5 before returning at the beginning of season 7. During his absence, fans of the series were able to discover Jonas Quinn, an alien who joined Sg-1 before returning to his home world when Daniel Jackson returns. After the departure of Richard Dean Anderson (O'Neill), at the end of season 8, the producers recruited new characters and established a new storyline to renew the interest of the series. Season 9 sees the arrival of Colonel Cameron Mitchell, Vala Mal Doran and a new leader for the SGC, General Landry.

The main mission of the SG teams is introduced from the pilot episode of the series: explore the worlds of our galaxy through the Stargate and procure extraterrestrial technologies to defend the Earth against the Goa'ulds. This lens serves as the basis for all episodes. The presence of archaeologist and historian Daniel Jackson sometimes provokes interests in anthropology, extraterrestrial societies and their cultures, and even moral issues encountered on other planets creating more philosophical and reflective episodes. Almost all of the extraterrestrial planets are populated by humans who were transported from the Earth by aliens, allowing the series to explore real earthly cultures such as the Aztecs, Mayas, Vikings, Greeks, Romans and especially the Egyptians. Several mythological places such as Avalon, Camelot and Atlantis were discovered during the series. In addition, the series sometimes provides fictitious origins for true religions and mythologies. Most of the important events in the series, including the arrival of a new enemy, are caused by an error or by human curiosity:After ignoring the Earth for nearly 5000 years, the Goa'uld discover the threat of the Earth when the military activates the Stargate and eliminates Lord Goa'uld Ra. Replicators are an achievement of an android that was created by human scientists, probably elders. The Oris discovered the existence of the Milky Way after Daniel Jackson and Vala Mal Doran activated a device of communication of the Ancients that allowed them to take possession of two "hosts" in the galaxy of the Oris. Another recurring motif in the series is the way all human characters speak perfect English, while some other people from other planets like Teal'c speak a rather archaic dialect. This motif is also present in Stargate Atlantis and is a source of humor, especially when a character such as Teal'c tries to use typically earthly expressions. Stargate SG-1, now 15 years old, is still very popular. In 2004, the US TV Guide magazine suggested that the popularity of Stargate SG-1 could exceed that of the Star Trek franchise. Although Richard Dean Anderson (O'Neill) dropped out of his role as a regular character after the eighth season, he continued to make appearances in several episodes of Season 9 and 10 of Sg-1 and in a few episodes of Season 3 of Stargate Atlantis . On August 21, 2006, the Sci-Fi Channel network confirmed the cancellation of the Stargate Sg-1 series after its tenth season. However, executive producer Robert C. Cooper quickly reassured fans by announcing that this cancellation did not mean the end of the franchise. He claimed that SG-1 would continue with a TV movie (in fact, two were made).Mark Stern, executive vice president of Sci-Fi programming announced that the cancellation of the series was not "hearing-based", and added that they had provided producers with enough time to conclude correctly the series. Mark Stern also announced that the channel planned to use some members of SG-1 in the next season of Stargate Atlantis, the Stargate SG-1 derived series which was not canceled. However, the "cancellation" of the series by the Sci-Fi channel is in fact the stopping of orders for new episodes of Sg-1 passed to the MGM. Sci-Fi will not release new episodes, but MGM, the company holding the rights to the series, has expressed its desire to continue the series through another medium such as producing a film on DVD or on the big screen. However, the channel Sci-Fi prevented the broadcast of a possible eleventh season on another channel, citing their contract with the MGM. On September 26, 2006, it was officially announced by a Stargate SG-1 actor that the series would not return with an eleventh season on another channel or on Sci-Fi. The last day of shooting of Season 10 was on October 5, 2006. The MGM announced on October 11, 2006 that it would make two films on Stargate Sg-1 directly on DVD, released in 2007 and 2008. Wednesday, October 11, 2006, Brad Wright confirmed to fans of the series that the MGM had given the green light to produce two Stargate SG-1 movies that will be released directly on DVD. The first film will be used to correctly conclude the storyline of the Oris, while the second film will involve a trip tempore
