Where I'm From

I am from the beautiful parts of Mexico

where scorching sun is always out

from hot sand and wide beaches

I am from Lori and Noe

I am from the mouthwatering smell of Pozole

that my mother makes when our family comes to visit

from cheering and singing

I am from loud laughing and screaming of children

that makes your ears always buzz

from tag and hide and go seek

I am from sweet people and kind faces

that soon fades away

from broken hearts and tears that fall like heavy spring rain

I am from new houses and new schools

from insecurities and exclusion

I am from a small family to a sudden big family

from best friends to enemies

I am from cotton and chains

that were worn by my ancestors

from freedom and happiness

I am from broken homes and hearts that can only be fixed with love

In my heart where I keep all these feelings and memories, is what makes my heart beat like a drum

It makes me who I am now and who I will be in the future

I couldn't ask for anything else

because this is where I am from
