I saw your old car today

It was broken down in the grass

I almost stopped to take a look,

but I turned my head and let it pass

My mirrors found each little detail

Every scratch and dent were clear as day

The longer I looked, the faster I drove,

and the further your car slipped away

Your voice came over the radio

and you sang a song just for me

I couldn't bear to turn it off,

so, I drove, and I let you sing

I rolled my window down for some fresh air

but your cigarette smoke traveled in

It rolled across the steering wheel

and wrapped around my skin

Through my nose, I took a deep breath in

and could smell your cheap cologne

I closed my eyes, and for just a moment,

I was no longer alone

I drove through every red light in town

I drove as the sun set and the sky faded to blue

I drove for hours and hours without stopping

I drove while I was still with you

As the stars come out, I come to a stop

My car has run out of gas

And now your voice, your smoke, your wonderful scent

is disappearing through the glass

I'm sitting alone in the darkness,

Wiping away the tears

I'm trapped in my seat, unable to breathe

You were never really here
