It Always Stretches

It always stretches, no matter how far, I walked,
No matter how far I crawled with it
Hanging around my neck.
Funny how it began.
Dancing intimately,
You twirled
I swung.
Then it strung out, from
Somewhere in between us.
I'd say it came from you,
Vice versa you'd say,
So let's just agree that it was-
It crawled up my leg,
Wrapped around.
Didn't even notice it.
Crawled up, then tightened.
I never felt it coming, but you saw it.
You said nothing, though,
So we danced.
Pretty soon I had it in my hands.
I wrapped around myself,
Ate, loved, wrapped it
Around my goddamn neck.
No blame,
But, I think you tied the noose.
Couldn't breathe, so I ran.
Ran and ran, hoping it'd snap.
Ran and ran, it never snapped.
It always stretches, no matter how far,
I walk.
No matter how far I crawl with it
Hanging round my neck.
It got thin as a spider web.
You could hardly see it.
It'll always be there, though,
Round my neck.
Painful, burning red.
Then proud, I wear it.
Thinking of when we danced,
I smile.
