Born with the blood of the Hunters, it wasn't much of a surprise when Alexander himself become one of the Five. He, like the others, was tasked with the duty of eradicating the vampires and to cure and kill Silas, his body tattooed by a witch with the map that led to where the Immortal was buried.
It was four years later, when he and his brothers were holding vampire executions, that he met his future fiancee, Rebekah Mikaelson and her family. At that time, he had no knowledge of what they were, presuming the trio to be human. In doing so, Alexander spoke of his cause to them, told them of the weapon that he had, a weapon that no vampire could survive.
During the time he knew them, perhaps he did eventually fall in love with Rebekah, though when he found out what she and her family was, he didn't hesitate to drive a dagger through her heart, his duty meaning more to him than his love for the blonde Original. It was those actions that led to his death at the hands of her brother, Niklaus.
Now he's back, in this town of Mystic Falls, once again, prepared to carrying forth his duty of removing the vampires from this town. And hoping to not see his beloved Rebekah again, for fear of not being able to drive a stake through her heart once again.
