I was six years old when my mother told me that 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder'. I had been sitting on a bar stool, head on the island in our kitchen, arms crossed underneath me. She stood behind me as I sobbed, and stroked her warm fingers through my hair, scratching lightly at my scalp. She put her arms around me and told me that simple phrase, enveloping me in a mother's love. That statement had always stuck in my brain, and as cliche as it sounded, it didn't fail to make me feel a little bit better about my condition.

But what never occurred to me is the fact that the beholder might not be able to see.
