Think about this. You will never be a wolf.

You are a child— worse, a girl. Weak and quiet and with growing hips. That is all you are, all you will ever be. All you need to be. A blade will never fit into your hand. They will not let it. Listen— You know this. The world is not a kind place, but they are here and they are holy. They will protect you with their axes, nets and prayers on the tip of their tongues. But can you trust men with the word of god clouding their minds?

Your mother tried to warn you. When you took a boat out to the sea with the winter breeze against your flushed cheeks and eyes widened with wonder. Your mother knew the truth long before you could understand. Wolves are loyal only to their own kind. They will feed you and protect you until they see you for what you really are. On that boat, far into the black waters of the Bone Road and blind around the thick fog, you learn to dance with the waves.

Her mother was not a wolf, but Kraken's blood ran through her veins. Vicious and unforgiving until god demanded her heart.

Eydis Nyqvist's whole being craves violence.

Desire is an ugly drug. She wants to belong. Among farmers or thieves, through smiles or blood makes no difference to her. The red canals shift into a home, and the street rat becomes a friend. And Eydis trusts him. She trusts a boy with gloved hands and dead eyes in all these guts and blades. This is your undoing. She looks into the mirror, and the monster stares back, unafraid and knowing. She wants to drown him. It would be easy. To break his cane and let him choke with a wave of her hand. To feel the thick fog clog his throat—his lungs. But his tongue is faster with promises she should know better than to believe.

Eydis is not a wolf or a rat. But she is hungry to stain snow red. Does it matter if it hurts her in the end?

EYDIS NYQVIST

Do you still pray                to a god that wants you dead?
