Chapter 1

Daniel was feeling a little moody and Tavo's constant poking was not helping.
"WILL YOU JUST QIUT IT!" She yelled earning a few glares and hisses from people who were trying to sleep.
"Look what you made me do!" She sniffed. Her eyes were quickly welling up.
"Hey, hey!I'm sorry. Please don't cry. You know i hate it when you do that. Please don't cry " Tavo begged.
"Why? Because I'm ugly? " Daniel's dam broke.
"What?! No! I never said that! Please I'm sorry I won't disturb you again. " A now frantic Tavo tried to explain.
"Are you calling me a liar? "Daniel sobbed.
"No! No! I'm not. Here. Lie e down and rest."
Daniel slid down and was asleep in no time. Tavo was at his wits end. His friend was very moody lately. He had to watch what he said to her. With that though he fell asleep.
"...vo....avo...TAVO!"
A frightened Tavo jolted up.
"What! What is it? Are you okay? What happened? "
"I think I'm catching a cold" Daniel explained.
"Oh"
"Remember the pills the doctor gave me six months ago? They seemed to work like magic. Can you buy them for me please. I promise to repay you when I get paid this month. Here I still  have the container. I think that will help with the name. Thank you"
"Okay I'll be right back. You have to get up though. You have and hour before school starts." Tavo informed as he ran out. He returned half an hour later.
"Here I got them. I have to rush off to work. Meet you there after school. Bye"and then he ran off again.
A few months ago Daniel had taken up a part-time  job at the small Italian restaurant. Tavo worked there too and had helped with getting her on board. They had then formed a routine; Daniel would report to her shift at three in the afternoon after school,  and they'd leave together at  eight in the evening. They were saving up for a small apartment.
The plan was to save up at least three months worth of rent and groceries so that when they finally did move in, they wouldn't struggle much to keep up with the bills.
They liked working at the restaurant because tgey got to eat tge leftover food and take some home. The owner was a nice old Italian lady who mostly spoke Italian. Daniel being a fast learner was quickly learning tge language and could almost speak frequently. Tavo was Italian so he didn't need to learn it.
Paula, the restaurant owner was like a grandmother to them. Sometimes when the restaurant was not busy,  she'd sit them down and narrate to them about the days before she moved to this small town. Sometimes though she'd teach them how to make various Italian dishes,  or just cook for them. Tavo could safely say that the constant food supply was all he could ask for and the evidence of it all could be seen on Daniel. She had started to gain weight since they started working there....or was that the reason?
Daniel rushed to the restaurant immediately after school. By the timeshe got there she was half an hour late.
"I'm sorry I'm late! It won't happen again " she pleaded the moment she saw Paula's disapproving look.
"Ok. Start by taking out the garbage." Paula tapped her head and returned to her cooking.
"Hi"Daniel  greeted as she rushed past Tavo who was cleaning some dishes and grabbed the two garbage bags by the back door, not waiting for an answer.
She rushed down the few stairs and tripped on the last one. Today was really not her day. Luckily she didn't hit her head. Her stomach however, felt the impact of the fall. Pain shot through her in waves. She waited for it to subside but it just got worse. She couldn't help the pain filled groan that escaped her lips. She was quickly losing her consciousness amd and the last thing she had were urgent footsteps headed towards her.

Daniel was not sure whether the body she currently occupied was hers. She felt numb. She tried to open her eyes but the lids just wouldn't move. She finally resigned and succumbed to sleep.
The next time she woke up. The numbness had disappeared and in its place a lot of pain. She groaned and tried to open her eyes only to close them immediately. The light in the room was too bright.
She brought her hand to her eyes and placed it  over her eyes then proceeded to open them. She was in a hospital room, that much was obvious. How she got there however, was a mystery to her. Well, not really, if she thought about it. The person whose footsteps she heard before losing consciousness must have brought her here.She wondered what was wrong with her. Could a mere fall warrant for the excruciating pain she was currently feeling? Was something wrong with her or was she really that unfit? Come to think of it, she really had gained some weight. Maybe that was the reason after all. She tried to remain positive but there was a little nagging voice in her head that was trying to convince her that she was terminally ill. At first she tried to ignore it but it grew so loud and persistent that Daniel started panicking. What if she was dying? What if she only had a month to live? What would she do? She hadn’t even accomplished any of her goals yet. What if….
“Hey, hey, hey, Daniel! I’m right here. Sssh! It’s okay. You’re okay. ‘’ she heard Tavo’s soothing voice over all the chaos going on in her head.
She could feel arms tightly wrapped around her and the gentle rocking of their bodies as he tried to calm her down. His scent that always smelled like a fresh pine forest invaded her nostrils and calmed her. She blinked a few times to clear the blurriness which she realized was because she was crying, then focused her eyes on his face. She had never seen Tavo so frightened. He was trying hard to act brave but she could see it in his eyes.
When he was sure that she was calm, he left to fetch the doctor.
A few minutes later he walked back in with a woman who seemed  to be in her 40’s. A bright smile appeared as soon as her eyes landed on her.
‘’Hello darling, my name is Sarah. I’m your doctor how are you feeling?’’
“Like someone just swung a sledgehammer to my stomach.’’
‘’Oh dear! I think they forgot to give your pain meds. No biggie I’ll make sure that happens soon. You guys are okay. No damage done. I should say though, I expected you to be more careful because of your condition. You can’t exert yourself too much…’’
Daniel felt her heart sink. She did have a terminal illness after all. Maybe it was her heart. Maybe it was ill and exerting herself would make it fail. She could feel herself panicking. Her breaths were getting short and both the doctor and Tavo seemed to notice that. She felt gentle hands on her shoulders and a gentle voice speaking to her.
‘’Now now dear, you have to calm down. You’re okay. Everything’s fine. You have nothing to worry about. The babies are fine.’’
If the soothing voice of Sarah did not get her out of her panicked state, the last statement sure did. Confusion passed through her eyes. She wasn’t sure what the doctor was going on about. What did babies have to do with her?
When the doctor saw the look in her eyes, realization dawned on her. The young girl clearly did not know she was pregnant. Daniel was pulled out of her thoughts by the doctor ranting ‘oh dear’ repeatedly. She turned to Tavo only to find him different emotion flashing through his eyes; shock, hurt, disbelief, then more hurt.
Daniel could tell she was missing something. Whatever it was it wasn’t good.
‘’Daniel,’’ Sarah called grabbing Daniel’s attention.
‘’ There’s no simpler way to say this; you’re pregnant.’’
‘’I’m sorry. WHAT?’’
‘’You’re…”
‘’I heard you the first time. What do you mean I’m pregnant? How can I be pregnant? Doesn’t biology demand that I have to have sex for me to get pregnant? Well newsflash Doc, I’ve never seen a naked guy leave alone had sex with one! So unless I’m suddenly going to give birth to messiah the second, PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME HOW I’M PREGNANT!’’ by now she didn’t care whether she was yelling or not.
Sarah on the other side seemed to be confused. Many thoughts were running through her head.
Maybe Daniel was raped and she shut down the memories to avoid the pain. Maybe the pregnancy was a drunken mistake. Maybe she was drugged. There were many possibilities many scenarios that could have resulted to this.
Sarah turned to Tavo and asked him to step outside for a bit. Daniel however, found it irrelevant. She had nothing to hide. She therefore asked him to stay. Sarah shrugged and turned to Daniel.
‘’Ok darling, I’m going to ask you some very private questions so that we can see how this came to be.’’ Daniel just nodded.
‘’ So we have already established that you’ve never had sex. Not in an instance that you remember anyway…. Have you ever gotten drunk and couldn’t remember the happenings of that night the following day?’’
‘’No. I don’t drink. There are better and far more important ways to spend the little money that I earn’’
‘’Um, ok. What about at a party have you ever been offered a drink and…’’
‘’I’ll stop you right there. I’ve never been to a party. I’ve never been drugged, I’ve never been raped. To sum it up, I have never had a man’s projection anywhere near my…jewels.’’
‘’Hey! I’ll have you know that men’s projections are jewels too!’’ Tavo who had been silent all along exclaimed.
‘’Not now Tavo!”
Sarah just shook her head and turned back to Daniel.
‘’Well, if you did not get pregnant by natural means then you have to have been artificially inseminated. That’s the only other way. Have you?’’
‘’I’m sorry artificial insemination as in like a cow? You can do that?’’ Daniel asked Sarah perplexed causing Sarah to burst out laughing.
‘’Yes… I guess. The doctor just has to inject a man’s semen through the birth canal. The chances are not very high but its still very much possible.
‘’That’s what she meant by improving my chances,’’ Daniel whispered. ‘’The pills were meant to improve my chances of getting pregnant not get rid of my flu.’’ She continued whispering to herself.
‘’Oh my God she inseminated me like a cow! She treated me like a cow! How could she? Well, I am a s stupid as a cow considering I let her poke my jewels without putting much thought into it. I mean what has a flu got to do with my jewels?’’
‘’Ok. I’m going to stop your rambling right there darling. What are you talking about?’’
Daniel narrated the strange happenings of the day she was accidentally inseminated…. like a cow.
When she was done, she thought she’d have to collect Tavo’s jaw on the flow with how low it was hanging.
‘’ Well that’s unfortunate. ‘’ Sarah said in shock. ‘’We will have to go see this doctor.’’
‘’I guess we will. Just not now, I need to absorb all this for now.’’
