It was a chilly evening, the light from the rose-scented candle illuminated our old hut. I looked at my mother cautiously when I heard soft footsteps outside our hut. Mother looked at me with her glistening coffee brown eyes and smiled while rubbing my back comfortingly.

Suddenly, the door opened revealing the tall figure of my father. When he came closer, his face had traces of red liquid and some of it are almost dry. My mother kissed him and told him to wash up while taking a small basket from his hand. Inside the basket were tiny chunks of meat, still covered with blood, I was sure we'll have meat for dinner like any other nights.

I remembered when I was at school, my seatmate Mimi always brags about how succulent and tasty the roasted turkey they had during Christmas. She asked me  if I ever tasted meat on my whole life and I told her the truth. I told her that my father comes home with meat every night. She laughed and told me how ridiculous it is since we're as poor as rats and we can never afford to buy meat. I cried and told my mother about what Mimi had told me. The next day, Mimi stopped going to school. Mrs. Tidby, our teacher told us that Mimi was missing and everyone was looking for her.

" Tara... Please help me prepare our dinner. "

I was awakened from my thought when my mother called me. I rose from my seat and rushed beside her. She handed me the basket and told me to clean the meat while she prepares the tomato and cinnamon for the sauce. I washed away the dirt and blood from the meat when a small silvery thing fell from the basket. It was a bracelet with a silver plate on it. I took it and went closer on the flame to look at the plate. There was something engraved at the back of the plate with a very fancy calligraphy.

" Mimi Waters ..."

I read it and smiled, mother was looking at me intently. My smile widened and I thank her for a very lovely gift.
