"Concentrate," Jean muttered, watching Wanda practice her ability. She had mastered picking up smaller objects such a disks, and she was now trying to pick up living people to which Scott volunteered.
"My feet are still on the floor, Maximoff," Scott teased as he stood almost seven feet away from her. Jean watched Wanda try and concentrate with a frown, before interjecting.
"Okay, that's enough," she said, placing a hand on Wanda's shoulder. She noticed Wanda's struggled and realised that perhaps her power was made stronger by her emotions.
"Logan said you were able to do this before on cable."
Wanda sighed, slumping her shoulders. At the Sokovian Preparatory Academy, they had tried to get her to use her powers as much as they could. This would involve them throwing her in dark cells full of lord knows what where her only option was to fight her way out. The stronger she got, the less they started to use opponents like animals, and move onto using actual people.
"I was really angry at cable, he provoked me. I hold nothing against Scott, except the fact that he's a bit of an ass," Wanda replied, making sure Scott heard the last sentence. Jean chuckled softly hearing Scott's loud scoff.
"Rage doesn't have to be the only emotion you use to amplify your abilities. It could be excitement, happiness... love," Jean spoke softly glancing at Scott with a loving look. Wanda smiled at the look she gave Scott and hoped that one day she would be loved like that. As Jean turned back to look at Wanda, the Scarlet Witch's small smile dropped as she realised that she had never experienced anything that Jean listed.
"The thing is, anger... it's all I have. I don't feel happiness, excitement or love. I haven't felt anything but fear and rage for the past 13 years of my life," she spoke honestly as she saw no point in lying.
Jean furrowed her brows, feeling an immediate sense to protect Wanda. She was well aware that the woman was a full grown adult, but so much of Wanda's childhood had been stripped from her, and even though Jean hadn't exactly experienced a normal childhood herself, she did have her happiest moments within Xavier's School for the Gifted. She just wanted Wanda to feel the same as she did when she first arrived: happy and excited for a new start.
"Then use that, and let go. The extent of your ability is up to you," Jean replied, dropped her arm from Wanda's shoulder and standing back, this time hopeful.
The mutant gave a faint smile to Jean before turning back to Scott and taking a deep breath. Raising her hand, her chaos magic transferred over to the cyclops, lifting him up in the air. Wanda gasped and turned to Jean, giving her a genuine smile, and looking at who was laughing mid air.
