Crack! Bang!

Josef shot straight up in bed, his heart racing. That sound- it was like someone had just kicked the front door in. Or had he dreamed it?

Josef listened, straining his ears in the dark, he wasn't used to the sounds Not in This new flat, not since his father was told he wasn't aloud to practice law anymore because he wasn't Jewish.

Across the room, Josef's little brother, Mikel, was still asleep. Josef tried to relax, maybe he'd just been having a nightmare.

Something inside the house moved with a grunt and a scuffle.

Someone was in the house!

Josef scrambled back on his bed, his brown eyes widened, there was a shatter sound in the nest room- crissh Mikel woke up and screamed, screamed in sheer blind terror. He was only eight years old.
