Jack died by saving his sister from falling into the cold water lake. Because of falling into the cold water lake, Jack lose his memories the one where he is still alive.
A few years after that, Jack was bring back to life to become a guardian-but not completely yet. After his fight with Pitch Black who happens to be the guardians biggest enemy, Jack is officially a guardian. And he continue to his life by protect children.
