The cold winter air blew through the shattered window causing me to shiver under my thin purple blanket. The sounds of yelling were loud from the living room. Both of my parents were angry. Neither seemed to like me. Both took turns insulting me, beating, and no one knew.
After a while, the yelling stopped. The only sound I heard was the loud footsteps heading to my room. I know it's mine because my room is the only room on this side of the house. Though I'm not too sure if you could even call it a room, it's about the size of an office. Not even big enough for a bed to fit.
I watched in horror as the old door slammed open and my parents walked in. Both fuming with anger and frustration that I knew would be put on me.
"Come here girl!" My father demanded.
I got up as quickly as I could. My bones ached from the beating I got last night for not cleaning the bathroom sink correctly. But I still smiled as I always do for them. Ready to take whatever they thought I deserve.
"Do you know why we're mad?" Mother asked while taking a hold of my upper arm.
"N-no ma'am," I replied, shaking my head.
"The school called telling us that we should send you to a private school for the gifted!" She said with venom laced in her voice.
"Yes ma'a. Remember i t-told you and father about the exam my class took to test our intelligence. I made the best score out of the entire school. Better than the seniors and juniors." I remarked proudly hoping to make them happy. Though it didn't look like it.
"Do you understand how much going to a school like that cost?" Father yelled his face turning colors as the vein on his forehead pops out. "Are you trying to make us broke? Or do you just enjoy watching us fight over how to pay for it?"
I shake my head. "I-I didn't Mean-"
Before I could finish my words, mother slapped me. Father punched my stomach, knocking me down. They proceeded to kick until I coughed up blood. Mother then reached towards the pieces of the window to cut open skin. Blood rushed out and flowed to the floor like a river, a very dark, red river. I watched as she made more painful cuts into my skin and as the blood poured out. It hurt, but surely I must deserve it or my parents wouldn't be doing this. My vision turned dark.
Waking up I could feel the sweat from my forehead caused by the memory.
"Kay? Hey, honey, are you okay?"
I turn to see my boyfriend of four years, Cameron, next to me with a worried look. His father was one of my teachers that took notice of my off behavior and bruises. He found out about my parents and helped get them arrested. While looking for a place to stay, he let me stay with his family. Cameron and I got close. And originally, his parents wanted to adopt me, but decided against it when they realized we had feelings for each other. Now the two of us are going to college and own an apartment together close by.
A pair of arms wrapping me up brings me back to reality.
"Kay?" He questioned. I didn't reply; I only moved closer to him, putting him in a tight hug. He chuckled and started to brush his fingers through my hair.
"Was it a nightmare again?" He asked in a soothing voice. I nod. This has been happening ever since I was free from my parents. Of course he knows what I went through, so he never questions.
He takes my arms and brings them up to his lips, kissing every scar my mother made. I know the kisses themselves don't do anything for the wound, but I feel like they heal more and disappear each time he does this.
"You deserve the world, and I, as your boyfriend and best friend will do any and everything in my power to do that for you. Never think that anything they did to you was because you deserve it. Okay, love?" He said, bringing my face to his. I nod, smiling inching closer to his lips placing a soft kiss.
"I love you Kay."
"I love you too Cam."
