"So, you are sure that I can just take him?" Evan asked his Uncle, Robert.
"For the fiftieth time, he's yours." Robert answered, laughing.
The two looked at the stud, there was still fire in his eyes from his racing days. The bay stallion pulled his head into his large square stall and continued to munch on his feed.
"And about the mares, they're pregnant right? To him?" Evan asked motioning to the stallion.
Robert smiled, "I thought I told you, the two mares, the black, and the grey are both in foal to this guy." Robert leaned against The Streaks stall.
"Just wanted to make sure.Again."
Robert laughed.
"Why are you worrying?"
"The future of this farm rests on me." He sighed. "If I mess up, this barn will crash and burn. What if we get no where?"
"We have two pregnant mares in foal to a grade one stallion, plus I've got a filly coming to the barn in a couple of weeks. We are making a lot of progress." Robert reassured his nephew, Evan, before patting him on the back and walking out of the barn.
-Two weeks later-
It was a early Saturday morning, no races were scheduled, in fact Finn Lake Farms hasn't been to a race since their opening a week ago. So much has went into making this facility a grand Thoroughbred breeding and racing farm. The three barns on the property held the mares and their foals, the stallions, and yearlings. Any other horses had a shed and run in. The track was huge, Evan worked hard to try and get a turf track, but he only had enough money for a dirt track. The pastures were wide and had only the top fence in Ohio. Since horses were the main focus of the farms, only two houses stood on the huge property. One for Evan, and the other was rented out by people. It was cold out, a early December morning. An truck and trailer pulled up the paved driveway of the farm. With a honk, the driver got out, waving to Evan who was near the broodmare barns.
Today was a special day, the filly that was promised to arrive was here.
"Is Robert here?" The driver said.
"My uncle? no, he went to the store to pick up some things." Evan walked towards the trailer.
"He is picking up this filly right?"
Evan looked confused, "N-no, I am. My uncle retired from breeding horses back in March."
The driver laughed. "Oh! Really? Never got the news."
"Yeah, so um, who's the sire?" Evan asked leaning against theg trailer.
"Hands Up." The driver said, opening the top windows of the trailer, so you could see the rump of the black filly.
"What?" Evan looked around. "Hands up?" He asked.
"Yeah, that's the sires name. What? Did you think I meant put your hands up?" He laughed.
"Oh, well yeah. But I've never heard of Hands Up. Is he a good stallion?"
"I guess you could say that, he was scratched in the Kentucky Derby. But won a couple of G1 races, and a few G2 races."
"Any info on her temperament?"
"She's a devil." The driver laughed, lowering the ramp, and unclipping the chains, he walked to the front of the trailer, opening the white side doors, he whispered to her. "Stay calm. Stay calm." Before petting her head and grabbing her lead rope.
"A devil?" Evan asked.
"Feisty." The driver backed up the filly, she snorted and wobbled her back legs down the ramp carefully, lifting her head. "Help me out?"
"Oh, sorry." Evan nervously laughed, he placed his hand on the black filly's rump and guided her out of the two horse trailer. She had a purple rug and purple shipping boots on, as well as a purple halter. She was lean and looked to have very strong legs.
"Wow." Evan muttered. The filly danced around on the lead, not keeping still.
"She's really alert." The driver said.
"Yeah." Evan took the lead from the driver, grabbing it near the halter, and gathering it at the end. "What's your name again?"
"Rick or "that driver dude""
"Okay. Well, Rick what do I do now? Have any papers I have to sign?" The filly chewed on her lead.
"Yeah, just this paper saying you picked up the horse. Here's a pen. Rick handed Evan a pen to sign his name.
"Okay, there you go." Evan signed his name in cursive.
"Perfect. Thank you, she also came with some files about her." Rick handed Evan the papers in a folder.
"Tell your uncle I said hey, who knows maybe I'll be back with another horse soon." Rick smiled.
"Hopefully." Evan laughed.
He tugged on the lead, getting the filly's attention, then he began walking to the empty yearling barn.
"You will be in stall one." He said, leading the filly in the stall, taking her halter off, and closing the stall door. The filly lowered her head to eat the hay on the stall floor.
"Now all you need is a name..."
