Sweat trickled down my face as I hit the swinging punching bags, releasing all the anger that had built up throughout the day. Every punch was a sense of euphoria, a hit of dopamine. I could've gone on for hours if my phone didn't cut out my music with my ringtone. Breathing hard, I picked up my phone. My mom was calling me. She rarely rang me, especially during my workouts.

Hesitantly, I answered.

"Daisy, you need to come home now," she breathed.

I annoyingly replied, "I am! I am! Just wai-"

A gunshot boomed in the background, taking the words out of my mouth. Before I had time to say anything, the phone call ended. I rang my mom as I was hurriedly packing my sports bag.

The call went straight to voicemail.

"No, no, no, no, no!" I whimpered. A small squeak escaped my pursed full lips. I ran as fast as I could to my car and popped right in. I turned the keys into the ignition. The car sputtered for a moment but then fell silent.

I stared in shock as I brought my shaking hands to my face. Tears poured down onto my t-shirt, eventually soaking it with my sad, salty tears. I sat there crying, bawling, wondering if I would ever see my parents again.

I kicked the door open with the sliver of energy I had left. Leaving my dirty bag in the car, I began to sprint home. But my house was 10 miles away. By the time I would get there, I would be too late.

But I persevered.

I pushed.

Anytime my legs screamed in agony, I ignored it. I couldn't stop, not until I figured out what had happened. I couldn't stop until I knew why I heard that terrible, deafening gunshot.

. . .

By the time I reached the front door, my legs were giving up on me. I meekly knocked on the door with no answer. I pushed the door a bit. It swung open, revealing a horrifying scene. My parents were lying in their blood on the flood, surrounded by ripped papers, and lit candles.

As well as a pentagram.
