OH, FOR THE GREEN LEAVES OF SUMMER
Dedicated to my son, Tony
Oh, for the green leaves of summer!
I'm tired of the slush and the snow,
Tired of the long drawn out winter.
The months seem so awfully slow.
This winter is even longer
Because of this leap year, you know.
One more day on the calendar,
One more day for north winds to blow.
Oh, for the green leaves of summer
When the rivers will once more flow.
I'm tired of their icy covers
When the fish hide deep down below.
I wish for days that are longer
When the farmers can plow and sow.
I sleep well when nights are shorter
And mostly only zephyrs blow.
Oh, for the green leaves of summer
When roses and hollyhocks grow.
When weddings take place for lovers
With their promises to bestow.
Perhaps I should visit Down Under
Quite sure to be welcomed you know
By cousins, sister and brother
But "Hush,"in case I can not go.

A/N The cabin fever that I suffer from at this time of the year,
after spending several months being "snowed in", has prompted
me to write this wistful piece as I dream of my son's beautiful
summer garden that he has so methodically designed to include
a variety of colorful annuals and perennials to blend in with a mixture
of evergreen and deciduous trees that provide just the right amount of
shade for the patio and the fish pond that he sculptured so professionally.
I am very fortunate to be able to spend a couple of months in late summer
with the local birds, wild rabbits and raccoons enjoying the paradise that he
has created. ~ Gail
