Ghazal: "Away"

A baby cries, a mother stares at something far away.

Nurse, I do not want it. Nurse, take it away.

Exercise books and pencils, rulers, chairs,

we draw in margins, plot our get-away.

Piano fingers, singing Deck the Halls,

we Fa-la-la, bad feelings pushed away.

Eyes passing looks between them, silent stare,

they're undisturbed, the husband is away.

Tinsel, wrapping paper, heartfelt greetings

in thick black bags, ready to throw away.

The years go faster with each passing year,

cascading snapshots, memories tucked away.

Do you know your child? Mother, look at me!

She looks beyond, her mind is far away.
