I was falling.
Too fast.
Ground rushing closer, stomach left behind, terminal velocity. An uncontrollable fall that seemed to both play out in slow motion and end in the blink of an eye.
Shards of mirror twinkled in the air around me, catching the light like raindrops, slicing my palms as I slammed into the floor.
Reflected in a jagged, bloodied sliver, a single eye appeared. Cerulean and ocean-deep, its tranquility stilled everything.
Crinkles formed at its corner, and I imagined his smile as it crawled across his face.
And just like that, I was falling all over again.
