Ambition, the desire to be better than you are, is only ever as good as its cause. Motivated by pride, selfishly seeking power for one's own personal gain is a dangerous game considered evil more often than it's considered good. But it isn't inherently evil. After all, if you're at the bottom, where else do you have to go but up? And why should you help those that pushed you down there on your climb up?
Dillion Lux had just wanted to expand his skills, to learn something not often mastered. There was no ulterior intent beyond a desire to learn for his own personal gain. But, apparently, even just studying the dark arts tainted him. In a second, after one small slip up, Dillion Lux lost everything.
Tom Riddle has always had nothing. The only thing that's ever been his is his own power, the one that kept him safe when he had to defend himself against the muggle bullies. So it should be reasonable that he would want to grow it, that he would want to have it all. But it is not.
The Dark Arts aren't inherently evil, just as Tom and Dillion aren't. But it's hard to remember that when everyone around them seems to think the opposite.

Dillion and Tom have a fairly volatile relationship and, especially early on in their romance, shouldn't be considered particularly healthy (they get there — I promise). This is a pretty hefty list, most of the things on it aren't super frequent or super duper explicit, I just don't want you going in and getting blindsided by a throwaway comment or scene! Anything I think is particularly rough is tagged & if you think a chapter isn't tagged but should be let me know and I'll fix it up.
This is also a slowburn, both in plot and relationship.
AUTHOR'S NOTE: It is in this fic that I attempt to make Tom Riddle less of a bad guy. Like, don't get me wrong, Voldemort is definitely, without a doubt a very bad person and canon Tom Riddle is only a fraction better but I think he had potential. He didn't have to be evil.
There may also be a little bit of bashing going on in this. I'm not sure I'd personally call it "bashing" so much as focusing on a perspective that doesn't look at people in a positive light. By people I mean Dumbledore
