Late Bloomers

Behold the geeks, the Goth freaks, the ugly ducklings,
the severely underweight, the severely overweight, the
pock-marked face shockers, for they know not yet their beauty.

Worry not the bullies, the mean girls, the sand-lot brawlers and
the impoverished gang-bangers, for they know not yet that the root of
their inner turmoil is fear.

Ridicule not the stutterers, the meek whisperers, the
shy wallflowers and the picked-last pseudo-jocks,
for they know not yet that theirs is an inner voice, fighting to escape,
that is loud, clear, and engaging:

That is why we should celebrate those who once so easily disappeared in a crowd,
the invisible, the glamour-less Jane, the hunk-less Joe,
for like the ugly ducklings and the slimy caterpillars
their beauty will soon captivate.

The once voice-less, soon holds the world captive
with an eloquence that enraptures the masses,
and whose persona is captured for all eternity
in history books.

They become Presidents, great philosophers, world leaders,
gold medalists, inventors, great talents, speech makers, trend-setters,
movers and shakers...the great ones,
the late bloomers.
