"Happy birthday... you loser..."

*****

"Happy birthday to you..."

"Happy birthday to you..."

"Happy birthday... you loser..."

"Happy birthday to you..."

I stood in line at the bakery with my hands in my pockets as I waited for my name to be called. I quietly sang to myself as I rocked on my heels. When the lady called my name, I walked up to the counter and counted the dollars to pay for the little white bag.

"Have a nice day!"

"Thank you," I grabbed the bag and started making my way towards the university I was currently enrolled in. I had a class in an hour and a half so I decided to use this time to find a quiet place to enjoy my birthday breakfast. I walked to the library on campus and waved to the librarian, Mrs. Menendez.

As I sat down at a table in a corner, I couldn't help but notice a few people walking around and fixing up books and shelves and moving around furniture. After watching for a little bit, I walked up to Mrs. Menendez to ask her about it.

"Ay, isn't it nice? The school finally decided to put some money towards fixing up this old place! These are volunteers who signed up to help out!" She practically sang out the news and I couldn't help but feel warm inside seeing how happy the dainty little lady was. I glanced down at the paper bag in my hands and looked back up to watch the volunteers.

I might as well help someone else feel happy on my birthday.

"Do you have room for one more?"

"In here, you'll find old copies of books that no one was really interested in or that have just been replaced over time. This is where we throw the old copies," The dark and dusty room was illuminated by only a single lightbulb in the heart of it and was lined from ceiling to floor with books and books and more books.

"Your job is to take all of these and put them all in boxes so we can take them down to the Goodwill and Salvation Army." I nodded at the old woman as she walked away, leaving me to work on emptying the closet.

I placed the white paper bag inside my backpack, careful not to smush it, before placing it in front of the door as a stopper. I rolled up the sleeves to my long-sleeved shirt and started to get to work, creating a pile of books for me to carry outside of the closet.

I balanced the stack in my arms and turned to start slowly making my way out of the closet, keeping my eyes on the stack to avoid dropping any of the books.

They, however, completely blocked my view, so I didn't notice the figure holding a giant box coming straight towards me.

The box and its contents pushed me back, causing all the books to fall onto the floor and a huge dust cloud to appear.

As I tried to clear the dust that had made its way into my lungs, I hadn't even realized the person holding the box apologizing frantically and offering their hand to help me up. Fanning the dust from in front of my eyes, I got a clear view of the person behind the accident.

A guy around my age, fit, with dark brown hair and eyes, wearing a black button-up and pants and a beanie covering the majority of his hair. Except for the little bits that poked out, which gave away his hair color.

"Aw shit. I'm sorry,"

"No, don't worry about it. It was an accident, it happens,"

The guy helped pull me up and I stood up to dust myself off.

"Sorry, I couldn't see anything. Mrs. Menendez told me to bring in the cardboard boxes for you to put the books in, they blocked my view and I tripped on something at the door," Only then did I notice that the object he was talking about was my backpack and him tripping on it caused it to move and shut the door. This time it was my turn to apologize.

"No, it's my fault. I left my backpack at the door like an idiot. I should've known, I know my clumsy ass probably would've tripped on it too," This caused the guy to give me a little laugh, causing a smile to sneak it's way onto my face. He helped me pick up the scattered books and place them back in their stack on the floor.

"Anyways, sorry again, about all that. I'm Alex, by the way," He held out his hand once more for me, to shake this time.

"Y/n." I took it and gave him a light shake and smile before he turned to open the door. The handle on the door rattled, but the door stayed in its place, unmoved. I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion as Alex tried turning the door again, this time pushing his body against it. I slowly crept up towards him as he continued with his efforts to open the door.

"Uh, you okay?"

"No, I... can't. Fucking- ugh."

The worry started to creep in as he gave up and wiped the sweat off his brow and placed his hands on his hips, glaring at the door.

"Alex?"

"I can't open it..."

"What?"

"We're trapped."

Shit.
