In hindsight, Saiki should have known that something was amiss since yesterday.
Just moments before he arose from sleep, a premonition occurred to him in his dream, painting a picture of Teruhashi. Her face was set in an uncharacteristically serious gaze. He saw himself talking to her, as if he was experiencing the vision from a third-person perspective, although he couldn't decipher the words. But whatever he was saying to her made her eyes cast down, her shoulders drooping like a wilted flower stem.
Then, like a burst of a bubble, Saiki jolted awake from his sleep, staring blankly at the ceiling above.
That was so awkward.
This vision meant that Teruhashi would most likely be visiting his house, shattering his dreams of enjoying a quiet day inside. He already had to put up with her antics in school, and now she was invading his sanctuary at home. Whatever that conversation was, it looked so uncomfortable that he didn't want to have it. He would make sure to avoid it today, at all cost.
Usually, premonitions didn't automatically spell out troubling circumstances, though her somber expression slightly put him off. Saiki tried not to think about the details, deciding to deal with the situation when it occurred.
Good grief. Not a great start to my day.
He let out an exasperated sigh before deciding to finally get up out of bed, rubbing his face tiredly. But as he sat up, he found himself staring at pools of deep, ocean-blue irises.
Saiki froze, barely bottling the scream that threatened to be released from his throat.
Teruhashi blinked at him innocently.
T-this was impossible...!
H-how... what the hell...?!
Thoughts raced inside his head a mile a minute, trying to come up with any sort of explanation that made sense, though it was hard to focus with his heartbeat pounding so loudly in his ears.
Maybe he was still dreaming...?
Yeah... that could be it...
Saiki closed his eyes again, willing himself to wake and for the girl to finally vanish. But when he snapped his eyes open, Teruhashi only blinked once more, this time cocking her head to the side.
He cursed inwardly.
Tsk! Don't stare at me like that.
At this thought, it dawned on him that he wasn't wearing his glasses, but she hadn't been affected by his petrified gaze. This only meant one thing.
She wasn't a living being.
The realization calmed him down somewhat, though he only grew more confused. So the girl sitting on his bed and giving him demure glances wasn't the real Teruhashi, though it sure acted like it. The fake Teruhashi batted her eyelashes.
Was it... was it trying to seduce him right now?
An already beleaguered expression crawled its way onto Saiki's features. He crossed his arms, trying to assess the situation.
If this Teruhashi wasn't a living being, then that explained why he didn't sense its presence instantly or read its thoughts. There was nothing to read. It was like an inanimate object, though it felt oddly familiar.
