Once upon a time an Evil Queen tried to cast a curse towards all the enchanted forest in spite of destroying, once and for all, the happiness of Snow White. This curse would transport all the people of the enchanted forest to a city in our world where they won't know who they are and they will think that people like Aurora and Mulan were just storybook characters.
However for this curse the Evil Queen needed the Snow's unborn daughter. So she just had to wait.
Rumplestillskin knows about Regina's curse, so he told to Snow and Charming, in trade of another thing, that they should send their daughter to another realm waiting for her to come back when she do seventeen years old.
Snow and Charming talk to the Blue Fairy and she order Gephetto to make a magic tree that would transport the baby to another realm.
Though Snow and Charming don't want to give up the child they know they need to give her the best chance, so when the time came they sent the girl through the magic tree. Her name was Joanna.
