The futuristic city of Pittsburgh has been enclosed in a dome following the Nuclear War, which left a great deal of the world uninhabitable. Several other cities within the United States have survived and enclosed themselves as well. Eighteen-yea-old, Alexia Glass has always been interested about life outside the dome, which is a capital offense. Anyone caught leaving the dome or talking about life outside is killed by televised execution. It’s the way the new government maintains total control over the surviving cities. So when the rebel stronghold devises a plan to leave the dome, Alexia lets her curiosity win over. Thrown into a dangerous world with a rising revolution, she realizes that maybe being rebel isn't a great idea, and just maybe there's a reason why no one should leave the dome.
