In school, she is a wallflower. She has few friends despite being a quite likable person. Her best friend is her malamute, Tucker. Almost daily after school River goes to "her world;" an area deep in the forest that no one else visits. There she studies, reads, or just disconnects for awhile. There, away from society, she can be herself. She doesn't have to try to blend in to the crowd when there is no crowd to blend in to. Life is great for River until her mother starts dating a logger who sees no value in the preservation of nature. Upset and frustrated, River takes Tucker and runs away to her world in the dead of night hoping he will not find her beautiful grove and destroy it.
