Thirteen year old Jake spends Christmas with his parents at the Oakhouse, the once grand, now decrepit home to his grandfather. Jake quickly begins to realise that the Oakhouse and Grandad Sherbet are not all they seem. On Christmas Eve, Jake's parents disappear, only to reappear six inches tall and having been turned to wood. Grandad Sherbet, his true colours revealed, imprisons Jake and, together with his octogenarian friends, prepares to steal Jake's youth and nascent magical powers. With the help of Viemar, a man carved from wood and brought to life by Grandad Sherbet, and Jake's friends, Elly and Stan, Jake battles to prevent his grandfather and his cronies from succeeding in their quest for immortality. A gothic page-turner laced with black humour, The House of Sherbet is a throwback to those childhood days of immersion in a strange, magical world in which the impossible can happen.
