In a world where humans, mages and outcasts (a group of those who have rejected both sides and lived like savages in the wild) are divided, Aria counts herself relatively luckier than the rest. As the second child of the human ruler of the Belgarde kingdom - King Rikard and her step-mother Queen Gia, Aria is a part of the Highborns - the ruling class of the humans, albeit not the heir apparent, who is her half-brother Alexander. All Highborns who have yet to come of age must attend The Institution, a school funded by Highborn families to educate and prepare the future generation of leaders. Aria and Alexander are both in their final year at The Institution, whereby upon graduation, Alexander will take his rightful place as the Crown Prince in the kingdom. Aria on the other hand simply wishes for freedom once her brother is crowned and she is freed from any expectations. However, all Aria's plans for freedom were halted when her class was ambushed at a school trip and her escape path led her through a portal to Icemere, the snow-stricken land where the mages live. Caine graduated top of his class at Icemere Academy 3 years ago and has since been one of the strongest fighters at the Circle - a group of magic-wielding defenders for the mage population. Caine is perfect in every way, except unlike the other mages his age, he can't seem to find his soulmate. For mages, finding their soulmate is crucial to strengthen their magic and provide security to their other half as compatible magic is transfusable in case of accidents. Caine has just about given up when a portal suddenly opened up and a Highborn girl - literally - crashes on him. Can Aria find answers in a place specifically designed to train mages to stand up against her kingdom and can she find solace in Caine, the mage who she can't seem to shake off?
