The darkness of the human heart survives death. Set in the 1700s, In an alternate history, fantasy version of Earth. The Ayakashi has run rampant across the Asian continent. The Onmyodo is an organization that has risen to great power by harnessing the supernatural abilities of these creatures, earning them great respect but also great fear and resentment. Yuki, a young Onmyoji, has great aspirations to ascend to the top of the Onmyodo and become a legendary hero. He also desires to find his younger sister Mei, who was kidnapped by the Ayakashi when they were children. Unfortunately, Yuki is a literal personification of the Dunning-Kruger effect. He has no talent for the leader role his doting Master put him in and his eccentric teammates can't stand to work with him. Of course, from Yuki's perspective he's a genius and their all just jealous. He is a very delusional protagonist. In Snow Souls, Part 1 Yuki and his team must travel to Shanghai in search of the rumored "Cold Child"; a strange creature that has been using the powers of ice and illusions to protect the women of the red-light district. While there, they learn of both the Zi family, a powerful gang rumored to use demons and of the Faceless Murders, where bodies have been turning up with their faces devoured. Why had Onmyodo sent them capture the harmless Cold Child rather than have them look into these more dire rumors? Or is something more sinister brewing behind the scenes? Could Cold Child actually be more than what they seem, and could they hold the secret to not only the dangerous Zi family but also the face devouring demon dog whom stalks Shanghai's streets at night? Perhaps... they could be the key to unlock a secret dark secret hidden within the Onmyodo it's self? More importantly, is this the mission where Yuki will finally gain the recognition of his team and prove that he's NOT the worst commander in the history of the Onmyodo!?
