"The Tell-Tale Heart" is a horror short story by Edgar Allan Poe. The story was first published in 1843 in The Pioneer, a literary magazine. "The Tell-Tale Heart" is the story of an unnamed narrator who murders an old man. From the beginning of the story, the narrator claims to be sane. It soon becomes apparent, however, that the narrator is not sane and is focused on killing an old man. The narrator admits to loving everything about the old man except for his blue eye. The eye is veiled or covered with film, and the narrator is fixated on this eye. In "The Tell-Tale Heart," Poe examines the relationship between love and hate.
