Fifteen-year-old Midge Weaver can't remember anything that had happened to her before her fourteenth birthday. She's never seen a phone or a television, she doesn't know where children come from, and she doesn't remember how she got the fracture in her skull in the back of her head, or the slash across her face. She is forced to be identical in every possible way to her mother, who believes growing up is evil and Midge will be a baby for the rest of her life. The only time she has to think freely is on the hour-long bus ride to and from her school. When she rings up a girl her age on an abandoned telephone booth and befriends a true crime podcaster in her class, she gets the chance not only to discover a secret that's been hidden for a year from her rural town in Newfoundland-and-Labrador, but discover who she is, and realise she won't be a child forever, no matter the objections of her mother.
