Lena Ambry was supposedly a smart girl. As such, she was supposed to have known to stay far away from Slytherin's resident melodramatic prefect, Draco Malfoy. She had heard the rumours, seen the people fawning over his intellect and looks and had reminded herself that interacting with him would bring nothing but pain.
But when potion partners are announced, and Lena Ambry finds herself paired up with the Slytherin boy, things begin to become a little more twisted. She knows all of the bad that he's done in his life, but when his grey eyes met hers, she faltered in her stance. Lena Ambry, who had once so despised the man, now found herself conflicted.
Now, Lena Ambry is dreaming of grey eyes and quiet laughs, all the while knowing that this is a bag of worms that she shouldn't get into. However, no matter how desperately she tries to push down her crush on the man, she can not deny that he makes her feel seen for one of the first times in a long time.
There's only two minor problems;
1. he's her best friend's ex and girl code is quite particular
and
2. he's helping death eaters to kill Albus Dumbledore
Other than that, it's a breeze.
additional notes
i. this is an au from the books so draco is not like his character, and there are some changes to the plot - this pairing is pretty much hopelessly in love x very reluctantly in love
ii. draco malfoy is a hopeless simp. he has a lot of rumours about sleeping around and breaking a lot of girl's heart, but this man is incredibly scared of being in a relationship and letting himself be vulnerable. he met lena a year earlier, when she helped him out with finding a book for a DADA assignment (she doesn't remember this) and ever since then has been trying to find a way to talk to her. they get paired together in potions and suddenly, draco doesn't know how to talk to a woman, especially not lena. they're kind of gradual only cause lena really dislikes him for the most part. he has still got the dark mark and he is still trying to kill dumbledore, but that's where the similarities end
iii. lena is incredibly loyal to her friends and family, she cares for them above all else so when she finds herself developing a crush on draco, she is incredibly torn because her best friend and him had a thing and it ended poorly. she spends a lot of time being kind of confused about what to do because of this. she's a massive people pleaser, which is another reason that this is hard for them.
iv. their love language; little touches, draco's chopping things in potion so she doesn't get hurt, staring lovingly at each other when the other isn't watching, not asking each other if they're okay but instead giving them little things to cheer them up, lena always giving draco food when he's not at dinner (she saves it and then goes to find him with it), sharing hoodies, pinky finger interlocks, soft kisses in corridors hidden from others, rubbing circles on each other's hands
v. when lena finds out, she and draco have an argument about it where he tells her he has no choice, and she asks him if that means he hates her for being a muggleborn. after they have this argument, lena takes draco to dumbledore where they make a plan - draco is to be a spy for the order. neither of them are thrilled because they're only 17, but they agree because they have no other choice. draco sends messages to lena and then she sends them to potterwatch - 𝐥𝐮𝐦𝐨𝐬
vi. lena is financially independent from her parents - she works a lot, and pays for her own place in the summer but she's still close with them she just chose to be out of the house. no malicious reasoning at all though
