"it's just a bit away from where we are now." you explain, rolling your shoulder as you fiddle with your knapsack straps.

tommy ambles up to stand beside you, wilbur bringing up the rear as he paces steadily behind the two of you.

"how deep is it?" tommy asks.

"i'd say maybe... eighty feet?" you speculate.

behind you, wilbur Inhales. "eighty feet? why do you keep a portal in an eighty-foot ravine?" he questions in an exasperated tone.

you chuckle. "well if it's eighty feet below the surface, not a lot of people are gonna find it." you reply.

"what's with you and elusivity?" wilbur asks.

you shrug. "i just don't like big groups of people."

upon coming across the edge of the ravine, you halt and shoot your arm out to stop tommy from walking straight over the cliffside. "watch yourselves, guys." you warn when wilbur comes to stand on your other side.

audibly, tommy's breath hitches. "jesus christ," he swears in an exhale. "how do you not fall every time?"

"oh, I have." you reply, leaning down and knocking your knuckles against the wooden splint attached to your shin. "that was a couple months ago... i've just gotten better at memorizing the area around it, so that I'll recognize it and know when to stop." you explain.

tommy eyes your healing wound with worry, but doesn't voice his concerns. "how do we get down?" He asks instead.

"there's a makeshift staircase along the rockwall," you explain. "but it's quite steep, and it might crumble a bit towards the bottom. so, just... mind your step." you warn.

you set the pace by slinking along the rockwall and taking careful steps down the staircase.

tommy follows at your heels, perhaps a bit too close, but even if you had any discomfort, you didn't voice it.

wilbur rappels down behind you and his younger brother, grumbling with every step.

as you edge closer to the end of the downhill path, you suddenly feel the stone deteriorate beneath your feet. you squeak when the ground below you crumbles and you begin to slip down the path with it.

before you fall, however, a pair of arms tightly wrap around your waist and pull you close to themself. you squeal and grasp at the arms around you in a panicked motion, before relaxing when you remember the people you're with.

you both huff, trying to catch your breaths after the brief disaster. "Thanks, tommy." you murmur after a short while, tapping your fingers against his arm.

tommy just nods, clearly a bit more shaken up about the situation than you.

you glance down. "it's only a four-foot drop," you  realize. "we can just jump down and then I'll show you to the portal." you explain.

wilbur scoots down beside tommy, then leaps down to the floor of the ravine, landing awkwardly on his feet.

tommy's head comes down to look at the ground. his face now directly beside yours, he whispers in a nervous tone: "you sure it's an okay drop?"

you nod. "it's fine, tom." you reassure him.

reluctantly, tommy allows you to pry yourself from his grip and slip down onto the ground. he follows as soon as you hit the floor, landing on your knees. he crouches down beside you. "you alright, [y/n]? did you land on your bad leg?" he asks worriedly.

wilbur cuffs the top of tommy's head, making the boy yelp. "what was that for?"

"you're worrying too much," Wilbur says gruffly. "[y/n]'s obviously not made of glass, it's not like they're gonna die by a four-foot fall."

ignoring how his tone kind of stung, you wobble up onto your feet. "i'm fine." you assure tommy, who now looks ashamed to have even been concerned in the first place.

you nudge his shoulder playfully, attempting to lighten his mood, but it fails.

"where's the portal?" wilbur asks.

"oh! the ravine pours into a cave system when it hits that hill—" you point out a decently sized hill in the distance. "my nether base is in there."

"and the portal?" wilbur repeats impatiently, causing tommy to shoot him a glare.

"it's there too."

"good, thanks for the help." wilbur turns and begins to stalk away.

"wait!" tommy pipes, chasing after his older brother. "why can't [y/n] come too?" he asks when he gets close enough to grab the edge of wilbur's coat and halt him.

"because—" wilbur rips his brown coat out of tommy's grasp. "— they've done their job. now we have a portal to go in and get back to l'manburg." he explains as if it were obvious.

"i thought we were gonna make a base!" tommy argues. "that's what we agreed on!"

"that's what you two agreed on! you may want to start anew, but i want my home back!"

"i want to go back just as much, if not more! wilbur, it's killing me that i can't see tubbo anymore!"

"and it's killing me that i can't see my son anymore!" wilbur snaps, getting dangerously close to tommy's face.

you shuffle awkwardly, before deciding to climb back up your path.

"wait! [y/n]! please don't go!" tommy begs, noticing you beginning to leave.

you stay still.

"wilbur, look! you scared them! this is probably why they don't like people! they're all dickheads like you!" tommy shouts at his brother.

wilbur cuffs tommy's head again, this time much harder than he had previously done before.

"will you stop doing that, you—"

"quit it!" you snap, shoving yourself between the quarreling brothers.

"go on, then!" wilbur says coldly, shoving you into tommy and turning around to walk in the direction of the portal. "go play house, i'm getting revenge." he sneers as he marches into the darkness of the cave system.

"wilby, i—" tommy begins, but wilbur is already out of their line of view.

"what an arsehole." you mutter.

tommy frowns. "sorry about that. he hasn't been this nasty since... well, ever." he admits. blinking, he looks back up at you. "did he hurt you when he pushed?" he asks, concern seeping back into his tone.

you rub your arm, but shake your head. "i'm fine, how's your head?" you bring a hand up to examine the forming yellow bruise on the side of tommy's skull, just above his ear.

he winces, but lets you tap at the small injury. "it'll be fine in a couple days." he assures you.

you smile. "alrighty then." you both glance up.

"it's getting dark out." you both say in unison.

tommy snorts. "we could not have planned that if we tried!" he jokes, giggling.

you laugh a bit too. "yeah."

the first grumble of a distant zombie's groan echoes throughout the ravine.

"but for real, though, we should probably set up a campsite." you conclude.

tommy nods. "i'll mine out a hole for us to sleep in."

"i'll start up a fire to keep us warm."
