"What has it been like without Maddie?" The therapist asked.

She asked that question every week. Every week I was forced into this shrink's office for an hour while she tried to get me to answer questions about Maddie.

Why do we have to talk about Maddie? Why can't we talk about the weather, or my grades, or anything else?

"I don't want to talk about Maddie." I said plainly.

"What did you say?" The therapist asked. She gripped her pen and notepad tightly like she was about to record every breath I was about to take.

"I said," I began. "I don't want to talk about Maddie."

The therapist (who I still didn't even know the name of) furrowed her bushy eyebrows and pursed her maroon lips. "Mackenzie, you know we have-"

I stood up. "It's 5 o'clock. Can I leave?" I asked.

The therapist sighed. "Yes, you can leave."

I bolted out of the room and into the lobby where Greg sat on his phone. His button up shirt was tucked sloppily into his pants from work earlier. "I'm ready to go." I said.

Greg looked up from his phone. "Oh yeah. Sorry." He shoved his phone into his pocket and stood up.

As we exited the building and settled into the car, Greg tried to make small talk. "So, how was the session?"

"Boring." I said plainly as I stared out the window. "She asks too many questions."

Greg sighed. "Mackenzie, she's trying to help you."

"Well it's not working," I snapped. "What does she know? Having a diploma doesn't mean she actually understands what I'm going through."

Greg stayed silent.

He continued to drive down the street in silence. "What do you want for dinner? Your mom asked me to pick you up some food."

"Nothing."

"You need to eat something." Greg said. "I'm tired of you sitting around the house doing nothing, Kenzie. You don't eat, don't do your homework."

"I go to dance." I pointed out. I was thinking about quitting soon, but he didn't need to know that. That would just give him more of an excuse to send me back to school. As of right now, I was on some excused absence thing where the school sent me my work and I did it from home. Except cut the part about me doing it at home because I don't do it.

Greg bit his lip as he stared out the window. "I-I... I know it's hard. We're all trying to cope, but you can't let this take over you. What would Maddie want?"

"You know, I've seen plenty of movies and read tons of books to know that's what everybody says. 'What would they think?'" I said. "Frankly, I don't care. Maddie is gone, and she's not here to say 'You should go back to school.' Do you people not understand? She's dead."

Greg took a sharp breath. "Mackenzie Frances, do not talk about your sister that way."

I felt tears beginning to gather in my eyes. "Why? She left us." I spat. "She left you, and mom, and everybody."

"Mackenzie!" He yelled.

The tears spilled over my cheeks. "It's true! She left us! She didn't just die in some accident, she chose to leave us!"

Greg pulled into the driveway and I jumped out of the car, running inside and into my room. I collapsed onto the bed as I cried.

"She's not dead, she's not dead, she's not dead!" I sobbed into the pillow.

"Maddie, come back." I cried.
