Chapter 3

The Letter from My Dead Mom

Reader’s POV

When I was seven, I learned that I was able to read people’s thoughts, talk to them in their heads, and if I wanted to, manipulate their minds. It was explained in a letter that my mom wrote before she died. My dad kept it for me until I was seven, and when I saw it, it was still sealed. It said this:

Dear (y/n),

Hello, (y/n). I’m your mother, (mom’s name). You must have grown up so much… I’m writing this letter to explain something. Maybe you heard the voices in your head. Maybe it told you what people were thinking, what they felt like, and more. It’s a little complicated, but I will try to explain this to you.

My dad’s side of the family had magical powers: being able to read, talk in, and manipulate minds. Our ancestors had it for as long as we can remember. We keep this power a secret with the exception of a very few selected people.

We come from outside the walls, as you may have heard from your father. We’ve been out there since the titans have appeared, and none of my ancestors have came into the walls. When I was born, my dad decided that we should move to the walls as soon as I turned 15; we moved when I was 12. My mom was a medical expert, and she taught me everything she knew. My parents died, due to a disease, when I was 15, and I went to the military, searching for any uses for my medical abilities. I was able to get in the army soon after.

Now, let’s talk about you. With the proper training, you will be able to use your abilities without any problems, but I won’t be there to teach you. So I’ll leave these instructions to you

It went on with how to train, how she would’ve trained me if she could have been here. Then in the end, it said this:

I cannot tell you everything, and you might not understand this now, but you will save them all. The prophecy had told us so.

Your loving mother,

(mother’s name)

I trained hard. Sometimes, the “trainings” left me dizzy, lightheaded, and nauseous. But after about two years, I was pretty good at it. That’s when my father died, and I never had the chance to tell him about the secret.

I should’ve told him as soon as I got the letter, but the past is the past and the dead are gone, no matter how much they mean to you.

~~

It was dinner, and I sat alone. I was thinking about others and their pasts. Almost everyone in the top ten had a difficult past.

Eren lost his mom, and his dad is lost. He’s determined to avenge them, and he’s brave, even after seeing those… creatures.

Mikasa’s parents were killed when she was young, and she was adopted by Eren’s parents and lived with him until they died and went missing. She keeps on an emotionless face, but she’s scarred and scared.

Armin was the top student in academics. His parents tried to go to the outside world, or outside the walls, and were killed. He lived with his grandfather until he was forced to take part in the “retake” of Wall Maria, a mission that sent many to their deaths. He was weaker than most, but his intelligence and strive for knowledge filled in for the lack of skill.

Annie… well, let’s just say that her life was definitely not normal.

Reiner and Bertholdt’s village did not get the message that the titans invaded the Wall until they actually saw them. (They won’t be… that… in my story :D It’s going to be different from the manga - read the description!!)

Jean’s dad, who was in the Military Police, got killed by nobody-knows.

Sasha lived in a village where food is scarce… probably explains her endless hunger.

Ymir… well, she’s not normal either.

Lastly, Christa lived in Wall Maria before it broke, and all of her family were eaten.

Basically, they all had sad pasts. Some people chose not to share these pasts with anyone, but with my “ability,” I could read their minds. I didn’t see “reading pasts” as one of the abilities passed down my ancestors, but who cares, my mother probably forgot to mention it or something.

I ate quickly, and left quickly. Nobody bothers me, and I haven’t had any interactions here except for Armin and Bertholdt, on the day of the break, and unless I absolutely have to, during training.

I decided to take a walk, maybe look at the stars, like my dad and I used to love to do. I followed the path, looking for a spot where maybe I could lie down and relax.

I found the perfect spot after about three minutes of walking. There were trees around it, but none blocked the night view from me. I looked up at the moon sadly, thinking of my mom.

Did she enjoy looking up at the sky like this? On a peaceful night, nothing bothering her, when it was just the view, the silence, and her? I closed my eyes, and when I opened them again, it was already morning.

Well, shit.

It was about three-thirty when I woke up. I slept early, and I’m used to waking up early, so it was not really a surprise to me. I walked toward the dorms, but stopped when I saw that the training dummies were out.

Let’s have some fun.
