His russet eyes stare into mine
He asked me a question, but there's nothing on my mind.
I can hardly concentrate on the words he's saying,
I'm entranced by the way his lips move when he's speaking.
"Hello?" He says, and I'm back down to earth.
Looking in his eyes that remind me of stability and self-worth.
"I'm good," I reply, but I can't remember the question.
I'm too focused on this tension.
My breaths caught in my throat., I wonder if he can tell?
If he kissed me right now my heart would swell.

Stop kidding yourself it's never gonna happen.
He's nice to you but doesn't share your passion.
You've never had a story that ended up happy,
Why would this time be any less crappy?
He turned back to his work the moment you replied.
So you're no longer staring into those russet eyes.
You pull yourself out of the daydream and push your hair behind your ears.
You're better off alone, you think as you try to fight the tears.
Off to the right are those russet eyes, not doing their work but staring at your face.
He half smiles, then looks away and sighs. He thinks you both know this isn't the time or place.
The time for you two may never come, but his lingering gaze breeds hope.
It means that you're not really dumb, and that hope can help you to cope.
