AKUMA was only a teenager when was consumed by fire. She had gone to the lion turtle to ask for the gift of fire. Of course, they lend her the fire if she promised to give it back. However, she wasn't able to keep that promise. Akuma has lost control of the fire and burned down the forest.
The spirits in the forest were furious and made up punishment to justice her actions. From that moment on she became a spirit herself and was forced to live in the forest, she burned down for the rest of eternity.
The first avatar, however, had different plans. He closed the spirit portals and therefore banned all spirits back in the spirit world. Akuma was part human and part spirit, making her being trapped between those worlds for as long as the portals would be closed.
After many years, the portals were opened once again. Akuma was freed and could now wander the earth and the spirit world in her physical body like a half spirit. All she wanted was to find her savior and to thank her.
